Disk Speed Test/HDD, SSD Performance in Linux

Hello everyone
I would like to know how to measure an input/output performance of a file system on such devices as HDD, SSD, USB Flash Drive etc. It is best to have a specific method of operation. I searched for this article: Disk Speed Test (Read/Write): HDD, SSD Performance in Linux - ShellHacks, but I do not seem to understand this method.

You can measure the reading speed whit "hdparm -tT /dev/sda" and for the writing speed
"d count=100 bs=1M if=/dev/urandom of=/media/usb/test"
